Process Plantkind focuses on designing full-scale gardens by taking a holistic view of your outdoor world, and results in a stronger final outcome. For example, if you’re planning to address the front and back gardens, we’d design both of those spaces at the same time. However, the installation of these design plans can happen in multiple phases.
01 Programming Learn from the space that surrounds you in your existing site conditions to gain a deep understanding of the unique vision and desired outcomes. 02 Schematic Explore multiple conceptual directions to establish guiding themes for the landscape that inform and set the tone for the story moving forward.
Design phase can take 2-6x months depending on scope of the project
03 Development Layer planting and material palettes together with selections that align with the project goals and meets the needs of the local ecosystem. 04 Documentation Communicate the design intent thoughtfully through a set of organized plans to guide the installation of the future outdoor space.
The build and construction process can take 1-6x months from start to finish
05 Sourcing Seamless project delivery and procurement with our network of suppliers for plant material, lighting fixtures, and outdoor furniture. Ensuring the original design intent is brought to life.06 Build We're a team with a sharp construction skillset that's embedded throughout the entire roadmap providing an integrated project delivery, consisting of multiple site visits and agile project management.

Common Questions
Are you available to start now or soon? Yes. We can move quick. The trees grow bit slower at times.
How much do projects cost?
Our projects range from $50k to $5m. We believe in financial transparency and open conversations.
Where do you work geographically?
Anywhere. We’re based in the San Francisco Bay Area but can tackle projects across the country and planet. What happens after the garden is designed and installed? We stay involved. Maintenance support, yearly check-ins, and ongoing care for the space as it grows into the future. Do you have contractors we can work with? Yes. A network of specialists and contractors we've worked with for a long time. You're in good hands. Will you come to our site in person? For sure. We love being in the space. If you're further away or out of state, we may limit to a couple of key visits.
Is there a payment plan for these types of projects? We can be strategic. Phased installations, flexible timelines, and guidance on value engineering where it's needed.
How does Plantkind compare in cost to other landscape architects? We're priced in the middle to upper tier of the market and structured to sustain a thoughtful small practice. Our pricing reflects a comprehensive design process that results in detailed plans.Do we need to provide a site survey or any site preparation? We handle all of that. Topographic surveys if required. It's a full service deal.
Do we need permits or approval from the city? Depends on what we're doing. Larger structures, extensive grading, tall retaining walls, complex drainage. We guide you through all of it. Most projects don't require them. Can the project be done in phases? Yes. We could consider designing the full picture together, then install in phases if needed. Single cohesive vision, flexible executionDo we get to be involved in the design process? Yep, we prefer that. This is a collaborative process. We create space for you to shape the design with us, not just receive a finished plan.
Do you handle hardscaping and construction? Yes. We think holistically about everything outside the home. Hardscape, structures, grading, drainage, utilities. Full service from design through build with our network of contractors. How does billing work? Deposit secures your spot on the project calendar. Payments are spread across the project timeline. Quick questions aren't billed. Hourly kicks in for anything extended. When should we involve a landscape designer? As early as possible. Even if a full project is years away, a quick check-in now saves headaches later. Already underway? We can jump in too.
